According to Qeshm Free Zone Media Centre, local communities gathered in Zeynabi Village to mark the International Day of the World's Indigenous Peoples by sharing experiences, memories and traditional knowledge passed down through generations.

During the gathering, community elders and residents reflected on traditional water management practices, recounting stories of cisterns and the role of social solidarity in sustaining community life during periods of water scarcity. Their accounts illustrated how Indigenous knowledge, from conserving water resources to ensuring their equitable distribution, has been transmitted from one generation to the next.

Participants also highlighted the importance of safeguarding this knowledge and passing it on to future generations, recognising it not only as an integral part of the island's cultural identity but also as a vital asset for the sustainable management of natural resources.

Welcoming the participants, Dr Ebrahim Rostam Gurani, Director of Qeshm Island UNESCO Global Geopark, underscored the significance of the day and the indispensable role of Indigenous communities in preserving the island's cultural and natural heritage.

The programme continued with a presentation by Dr Dashtizadeh, who explored the history of Zeynabi Village and shared memories of this historic settlement.

Dr Atousa Momeni, Director General of the Regional Research Centre for Safeguarding Intangible Cultural Heritage in West and Central Asia, under the Auspices of UNESCO, also joined the gathering online, highlighting the vital role of Indigenous communities in sustainable water management.

The event concluded with cultural performances, reflections on the history and traditions of the people of Qeshm, and the presentation of the valuable publication ‘Ganz-e Bapu (Grandfather’s Treasure)’ to the guests.

Observed annually on 9 August, the International Day of the World's Indigenous Peoples provides an opportunity to celebrate and safeguard the languages, traditions and ways of life of Indigenous Peoples, who serve as custodians of their lands' cultural and natural heritage.
